Mysore in south India is the home of ashtanga yoga. It is the city where Shri K Pattabhi Jois (known to his students as Guruji) taught the system for several decades at his Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute (now the KPJAYI) until his death in 2009.
Hundreds of students travel to Mysore each year to study with his grandson Sharath Jois, the current lineage holder of ashtanga yoga. Devoting time to study at KPJAYI is not always possible for everyone – there are many dedicated practitioners who have not yet been. For those who do make annual trips, it often becomes a treasured and essential part of their yoga journey.
To teach this method, students are required to commit to study at KPJAYI over several years. The institute states that “it is the only authority able to authorise or certify individuals to teach the ashtanga yoga method as taught by Shri K. Pattabhi Jois and R. Sharath.”
